Grenville Bird Species List
Grenville is a maturing gravel pit set amongst agricultural landscape. It is a relatively young lake with the habitat improving year upon year as the vegetation matures. The varied habitats and the management of the bankside vegetation have resulted in an improving wildlife haven and as such it supports significantly important populations of many species of current conservation concern.
Several nationally threated species are breeding successfully at Grenville. Of particular note are Yellow Wagtail, Linnet and Reed Bunting that breed in significant numbers. Additionally Oystercatcher have made the island their home and have breed successfully.
To date, 144 different bird species have been recorded at Grenville. The table below summarises the status of each one.
The UK wild bird indicator is one of a suite of indicators used by the Government for measuring sustainable development and trends in biodiversity. Species are therefore colour coded according to their conservation status. Those of greatest conservation concern are shown in red, and those of moderate concern are shown in amber. It is clear from the list that Grenville supports many species of conservation concern.
